Timeline of Kenneth's Life
1915
Kenneth Edward Graham was born on Feb. 12 near Wagon Mound, New Mexico, the fourth child of Indiana homesteaders Will and Vesta Graham.

The Graham family moves back to their roots in Auburn, Indiana, to be closer to Will's father, who was in poor health (below, Kenneth is far left).
1934
Kenneth graduates from Auburn High School. His yearbook notes: "'Kenny' is sport-minded. He doesn't say much, but when he does he knows about what he is talking. His chief characteristic is never having his French lesson."
1941
Kenneth, his siblings, and some of their cousins go on a memorable summer camping trip—what would end up being their last time to enjoy one another's company in peacetime before WWII.
JULY 1944
Just 22 years old, Kenneth's brother James is killed in action in Burma while serving with Merrill's Marauders, sending his family reeling with devastation.
1945
After V-E Day on May 8, Kenneth does not get to go home, but instead is sent directly to the Pacific theater, where he works in a mailroom in the Philippines. It wouldn't be until late December in 1945 that he would finally go home.
1951
Rose graduates and begins her teaching career. Shortly thereafter, Rose and Kenneth get engaged.

1980s-2000s
The Apple Butter tradition continues! Stemming from Vesta's Pennsylvania-Dutch roots, it was a central part of the family business at the cider mill—and eventually turned into a seasonal celebration for the entire extended family.
2009
After suffering from Alzheimers for several years, Rose dies.
2014
Kenneth dies in his sleep at home, where he was being cared for by two of his sons.
1917
After nine years of homesteading, Will and Vesta decide to move their family from the hardscrabble life in New Mexico to the lush hills of Virginia (below, Kenneth is the rightmost child).
1930
Will and Vesta buy the local pre-Civil War cider mill and start a business selling apple cider, apple butter, sorghum molasses, and even fishing worms raised in the apple scraps. Kenneth and his siblings contribute to operating the mill.
1940s
The Graham family moves across town into a home adjacent to the cider mill. Next door to their home, Will opens the Log Cabin Market, which combined a small grocery store with selling seasonal fruits trucked in from Michigan.
1942
Kenneth is drafted into the army and sent to the European theater, where he works as a gunner. His four brothers also serve, while his parents and sisters wait anxiously at home. "It was all a terribly sad and unreal time. It was hard to fathom the disruption of our family life," writes one of his sisters.
DEC. 1944
While in the trenches, Kenneth suffers from severe pneumonia, and is sent to a military hospital in England to recover. While he is there, his company fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
1949
Kenneth meets his younger sister's college roommate, Rose Carter—his future wife.
1952
Rose and Kenneth get married and begin their life together in Auburn, Indiana.
1958
Tired of living in town and longing for their kids to grow up surrounded by nature, the Graham family moves to a 50-acre wooded property outside of town.
1975
Though Kenneth tries to focus on painting when possible, it often takes a backseat to raising his family and working as a house painter.
